As part of the First Class Rank Requirements, Troop 99 created their own orienteering course. Orienteering is the sport of navigation, and the goal is to complete a course of unfamilar terrain in point-to-point order, using only a compass and map.
The requirements for First Class Scout as listed by the BSA are:
4a. Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/ or width of designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.).
Not to be underestimated, Troop 99 leaders created a course of five miles for the scouts to follow, set up throughout Kimball Pond in Dunbarton, NH. This course traversed woods, and even across a beaver dam for a bridge.
