June's scouting theme is Boating Safety, so the Thursday night troop meetings have been held at Mountain Base Pond in Goffstown.
Week 1
The first week's lessons were given by patrol leaders, who taught the scouts the basic parts of a canoe and kayak. They also described the parts and names of the oars, and demonstrated the proper way to row and steer. They learned the safe way to enter and exit a kayak or canoe in the water.
At the end of the evening, there was time left for Greg to put a kayak in the water and demonstrate how to get in and out, and steer.
That meeting's lessons satisfied 3 requirements of the Aquatics section of the First Class Rank.
Week 2:
Stuart led the scouts in a lesson about life vests, and then every scout chose a vest and learned how to make sure it fits properly.
To demonstrate their new navigational skills, the scouts put their canoes in the water, and paddled all around the lake.
Excellent work, Scouts! Everyone did great in navigating their boats, and no one fell out.
Next week: Same time, same place, where we will cover situational awareness while on the water.
